Cala Maset Sunrise and Via Ferrata (pt. 2)
7-03-2019
DAY 15
Another early to rise day with a sunrise on the agenda. It turns out the only the girls and women of the bunch were willing to sacrifice some sleep to witness this event. So my mom, Maya, Petra, Carla, and Anna met at 5:30am to walk to the beach. The destination was Cala Maset for viewing the sunrise show. This small beach has a secret - during the days around the summer solstice, when the sun rises exactly in the east, the first rays of dawn fall right there and transform it into a kind of golden jewel. Since it was just 1 week past the solstice, we thought we would check it out.
After taking 2 incorrect access paths, we finally found it on the 3rd try. It was a very small beach with cliffs on either side. Petra had brought some Belvita crackers "a.k.a. biscuits" so we nibbled on those. The mosquitos also decided to have a nibble on us. My mom had brought long pants and a jacket, but everyone else was just exposed to the blood sucking insects. The best solution seemed to be submerging my body underwater. So I jumped in the sea along with Carla and Anna. However, the water was a bit cold for them so they did not get to enjoy the relief from the bugs.
As the sun rose, it did make the cliffs around the beach glow, even if it was not quite as noticeable as we had hoped. It was still gorgeous though! We took some pictures then headed back as we wanted to hit the via ferrata before it got too hot.
Back at the hostal, we collected Dan and James, dropped off Anna, and headed back to the via ferrata to do the 2nd half of it. Luckily, we had the place to ourselves. The 2nd half tested your strength more and was really exciting. Petra and Carla had so much fun (type 1 & 2) and can't wait to experience more via ferratas. Despite beginning at 7:30am, it was still quite hot by the time we finished and everyone was dripping sweat. We were quite pleased that we would be back in time to have some breakfast where we proceeded to consume a lot of yummy food.
It seemed like we were trying to stretch time so as to spend more with Paul, Petra, Carla, and Anna. From the moment we met them, the connection was instantaneous. They felt like family. No wonder my parents wanted so badly to fly over the Atlantic Ocean to see them. At one point, I believe I even heard Ana ask her parents if we are their cousins or something - even if not by blood, it feels close enough!
For dinner, we ordered pizza and salads and just ate them at the hostal for a final relaxed evening with our friends. Our flight the next morning was early (we had to leave the hostal by 2:30am), so we said a long goodbye to our friends, took some pictures and went to sleep.

The rest of the day was quite chill. We packed up all of our gear and just hung out with our friends. Maya, James, Carla and I headed back to the beach to do a little bit more snorkeling in the afternoon.

Fantastic blog, family and time together in Sant Feliu - too short, but hopefully it will not be so long before we all meet up again.
