Jumps, Toboggans, and not much food

DAY 2
I also spotted a cool bridge off to the side of the road, and we stopped to take some photos!
We arrived in the town of Colungo where my mom had booked an awesome apartment for us. Then, we headed out for our first canyon called Barranco Formiga. Our plan was to get lunch along the route, however we were unable to find a restaurant during 45 minutes of driving and passing through 6 small towns. Only a few hours before in Barcelona, there was food every where, and now there was almost none to be found! So we a0te the food we had in our car – Belvita crackers and nectarines. We called it lunch and hit the trail for a 5-hour canyoning/via ferrata adventure.
The hike in was interesting because it had a via ferrata as
part of the trail. After repelling into the canyon 60 feet, we struggled to squeeze into our
wet suits before jumping into the chilly waters. The canyon was beautiful –
with turquoise water and towering walls.
There were a bunch of repels,
water slides (in Spanish, it is called toboggan), and jumps. We were having a
blast - then a helicopter started flying low above the canyon. We reached a big
jump and after James and I launched ourselves into the pool below, we found out
a person in the group in front of us had gotten severely injured. As we waited
for the rest of our family to repel down, the helicopter descended, blowing
leaves, dirt, and sticks up into the canyon where we were. The injured person was
lifted up into the helicopter and the canyon was tranquil again with an added
layer of worry.
By the time we reached the end of the canyon, our stomachs
were complaining as it was 8:30pm and we had not eaten real food since
breakfast. We packed up and headed back
to Colungo for a late dinner and some dry clothes, arriving at the restaurant
around 9:45pm. The food was basic, but our stomachs sure didn’t mind.
