Barranco Peonera Canyon

DAY 4

Happy Summer Solstice! For our family, more daylight means that we can cram more adventures into the day. It seems that we have mostly adjusted to the time change, but it still feels really early when we have to wake up. We packed up our stuff, had a breakfast in the apartment (eggs, jam, and yummy bread), and headed out for Canyon Peonera. We’ve heard that this is a really fun canyon, so we were excited to check it out.

As we hiked out to the canyon, we were in the trees and then it opened up into a sweet view of Canyon Peonera. Once down into the canyon, we squeezed into our wetsuits again and set off down the canyon. Our map was pretty good, but it was in French so some of the details were tricky to understand. Beforehand, we talked with a guide named Moncia and she told us about the places where we needed to use extra caution to avoid super dangerous spots. So, we approached each feature with not only a sense of awe, but also caution.

This canyon was unbelievable! As we rounded each corner, our breath was taken away by the awesomeness (and because the water was chilly). There were sweet jumps, narrow canyon swims, water slides, tunnels, and a super cool hole that you could swim into and pop out above.

Suprisingly, even with the wetsuits we have gotten chilly a few times... and what's a better way to warm up than some push-ups? We had some fun trying to balance on the rocks enough to do a few.

Close to the end, we were lucky enough to share company with a friendly goat! They posed for many pictures:)

We finished the canyon at a damn with a bar that sold ice cream. Yes! So, we dried out our stuff while my dad hitchhiked back to the car. When he got back to us, we had ice cream after we packed up the gear and headed to Casa Jesus in Abiego. We all agreed that Peonera was an awesome experience and definitely worth doing.

At Casa Jesus, we were pleasantly surprised that we had 2 rooms and each one of us got a bed. We had a conversation together about whether or not we wanted to try to squeeze in another adventure before the end of the day (like a dry canyon or caving) – by majority rules we ended up having some chill time rather than pushing the limits of our exhaustion. As you can probably guess, my mom was overruled.

Dinner was at Casa Jesus so we didn’t even have to go anywhere. The food was delicious! We went to bed as happy campers.
